Strong Foundations

Building the skills that open up learning

Strong foundations in literacy and numeracy give tamariki | children the skills they need to access an increasingly wide world of learning. We teach these areas intentionally and consistently, using evidence informed approaches while responding to each child, their development and what they need next.

Structured Literacy

Our structured literacy approach follows a clear progression of knowledge and skills across the kura | school. We use the University of Canterbury’s Better Start Literacy Approach, with kaiako | teachers and support staff undertaking specific training to create consistency as tamariki | children move through their learning journey.

Support continues for as long as a child needs it, while still giving them access to the vocabulary, ideas and comprehension expected at their year level.

Numeracy

Our numeracy programme builds understanding progressively, from number and place value through to applying mathematical thinking to practical problems. Teaching is intentional and responsive, with kaiako | teachers adapting learning to the understanding and needs of the tamariki | children in front of them.
