Hauora & Wellbeing

Learning to understand ourselves and one another

Hauora | wellbeing is an important part of learning at our kura | school. We want tamariki | children to understand their own wellbeing, recognise and name how they are feeling, build strategies for regulation and know how to communicate when they need support.

Rather than only responding when things are difficult, tamariki | children learn about their social, emotional and physical wellbeing as part of everyday school life.

Mitey

Mitey provides a school wide approach to teaching mental health curriculum and wellbeing. Tamariki | children take part in weekly learning that helps them understand emotions, relationships, regulation and the things that can affect how they feel.

The learning responds to the children in front of us. Kaiako | teachers can draw on what is happening within a class and themes emerging through wellbeing check-ins, using picture books, literacy, drama and role play to explore these ideas while tamariki | children are calm and connected. This gives them understanding and strategies they can draw on when things feel more difficult.

Pulse

Regular, private Pulse check ins give tamariki | children another way to tell us how they’re feeling. Children can reach out for support and choose a trusted staff member they would like to connect with when they need someone.

The wider themes we hear through Pulse also help inform our wellbeing learning and mental health curriculum, giving us opportunities to talk, learn and build understanding around the things that matter to our tamariki | children.

Moving Smart

Our Moving Smart Perceptual Motor Programme gives tamariki | children opportunities to develop the physical foundations that support learning.

Through movement and play, children develop balance, coordination, strength, stamina, memory and hand eye and foot eye coordination, building confidence in their bodies and their ability to participate fully in their school day.

Our Dedicated Hauora | Wellbeing Space

Sometimes tamariki | children need time, space and support to regulate before they are ready to return to learning. Our dedicated Hauora | Wellbeing Space gives children a safe place to connect with trusted adults, express what they are feeling and develop strategies that help them find their way back to calm and learning.
