Science, Technology & Discovery

Curiosity becomes something to investigate, test and build

Tamariki | children are encouraged to ask questions, explore how things work and learn through doing. Through science, technology, engineering and practical projects, they have opportunities to experiment, solve problems, work collaboratively and turn their ideas into something real.

House of Science

House of Science brings hands on science directly into our learning communities. Each kit gives tamariki | children the equipment and materials to explore a different scientific concept through practical investigation.

Over two week blocks, children might test the pH of different substances, investigate water quality, launch rockets or explore how plants grow, building their understanding through experimentation, observation and discovery. These examples are directly grounded in Rachael’s description of how House of Science works.

EPro8 & STEM

STEM learning gives tamariki | children opportunities to tackle practical challenges where there isn’t always one obvious answer.

Through experiences including EPro8, children work together to design, construct, test and refine their ideas, developing skills in engineering, technology, problem solving and collaboration.

Maker Space

Our Maker Space gives tamariki | children somewhere to get hands on, use tools, build things and turn ideas into practical outcomes.

The learning extends into real projects around our kura | school, where children can help create, maintain and repair things that are genuinely needed. These experiences build practical capability and problem solving skills while giving tamariki | children the satisfaction of seeing that what they can do has real value to the people and place around them.

Science is all around us

Some of our richest opportunities for discovery are right outside the classroom. Our kura | school environment gives tamariki | children real places to observe, investigate, test ideas and understand the natural world.

Science learning happens through everyday experiences across the kura | school, from exploring water play and using the pulleys and Archimedes screws, to investigating the mara kai, sand digger and bug hotels. Wild areas around the kura | school also give classrooms opportunities to explore the whenua | land and the ecosystems around them.
