Sport & Ocean

Being active is part of life at our kura

We want tamariki | children to experience movement and sport in many different ways, building confidence, friendships and the opportunity to discover activities they enjoy.

Across the year, children can take part in a wide range of school sports and events, with opportunities to represent our kura | school and progress into increasingly challenging competition.

School & Regional Sport

For some sports, tamariki | children can progress through several levels of competition. In swimming and cross country, this can begin at Waihī Cluster before progressing to North Cluster, Western Bay of Plenty and Bay of Plenty events. Tamariki | children also have opportunities to represent the kura | school at regional Rippa Rugby tournaments and other school and inter school competitions.

Our school netball teams play in the local Waihī competition, giving tamariki | children the opportunity to train and compete together throughout the season.

Connected to our sporting community

Sport also extends beyond the school gates. Many of our tamariki | children are involved in local clubs, including Waihī Rugby Club, Katikati Football Club and the local rugby league club, while other opportunities such as tennis lessons are available within our community.

These connections give children more ways to find something they enjoy, develop their skills and continue participating outside of school.

Ocean Sport

Living and learning at Waihī Beach means the moana | ocean is an important part of our world.

From Year 3, tamariki | children have opportunities to develop their confidence and understanding in the ocean through surf lessons and surf lifesaving, connecting the skills they learn at school with an environment that is part of everyday life for many of our whānau | families. This is strongly supported by the existing school material, which specifically connects surfing, fishing and surf lifesaving with developing ocean literacy.

Surfing

Aspiring surfers can take part in surf lessons during Terms 1 and 4 from Year 3, building their skills and confidence in the water.

For tamariki | children who want to take it further, our school surf team competes at local and regional competitions, giving children another opportunity to represent their kura | school through something uniquely connected to where we live.

Surf Lifesaving

From Year 3, all tamariki | children are given opportunities to learn about surf lifesaving, developing knowledge and skills that help them better understand the ocean environment around them.

Alongside experiences such as surfing and fishing, this contributes to the ocean literacy we want our tamariki | children growing up at Waihī Beach to develop.
